Until 1898 most rulers of Anhalt-Dessau had been interred in St Mary’s Church in Dessau (or the Palace Church; see the picture below). The church had been badly damaged during the Second World War and the tombs despoiled shortly after the war. None of them have been preserved. The mortal remains of the princely family were reburied in the Berenhorst crypt on Cemetery I in Dessau.

The mausoleum had been damaged during World War 2 and the tombs despoiled shortly after the war. The ducal sarcophagi are preserved inside the mausoleum but the mortal remains of the ducal family were reburied in the nearby cemetery in Dessau-Ziebigk (Ziebigker Friedhof, Saalestrasse) in an unmarked grave.

Died in 1918 at Ballenstedt.
Buried with his consort Duchess Marie of Baden in Mauoleum in the Georgengarten at Dessau. After WW2 reburied on the cemetery in Dessau-Ziebigk.

APRIL-SEPT. 1918: EDWARD (Eduard)
Born in 1861 at Dessau.
Father: Duke Frederick I of Anhalt. Mother: Duchess Antoinette of Saxe-Altenburg.
Married in 1895 in Altenburg Princess Louise of Saxe-Altenburg (*1873 Altenburg,+1953 Altenburg). Divorced in January 1918.
His issue who reigned:
-JOACHIM ERNEST (*1901,+1947).
Died in 1918 at Berchtesgaden.
Buried in Mauoleum in the Georgengarten at Dessau. After WW2 reburied on the cemetery in Dessau-Ziebigk.
His former wife Princess Louise of Saxe-Altenburg was buried in the ducal burial ground at Trockenborn-Wolfersdorf.

SEPT.-NOV. 1918: JOACHIM ERNEST (Joachim Ernst)
Born in 1901 at Dessau.
Father: Duke Edward of Anhalt. Mother: Princess Louise of Saxe-Altenburg.
Married firstly in 1927 at Ballenstedt Countess Elisabeth Strickrodt (*1903 Plauen,+1971 Berlin). Divorced in 1929.
Married secondly in 1929 at Dessau Editha Marwitz (*1905 Düsseldorf,+1986 Garmisch-Partenkirchen).
Deposed in 1918.
Died in 1947 at Buchenwald concentration camp and was buried there (no tomb).
